Health Conscious Eatery Shuts Doors in Reston Amid National Restructuring

Dining options in Reston Town Center have shifted following the permanent closure of True Food Kitchen. After more than five years of operation, the health focused chain ended service at its Democracy Drive location on October 4. This move comes as part of a larger corporate shakeup involving a bankruptcy filing intended to restructure the company’s finances, leading to the shutdown of twelve restaurants nationwide, including another site in Bethesda.

In a notice posted to the restaurant doors, the company thanked both its staff and loyal patrons for their support over the years. Chief Executive Officer Jeff Chandler acknowledged that these closures are particularly difficult for the team members involved and stated that the company is committed to providing resources and guidance for those losing their jobs. Despite these losses, True Food Kitchen continues to operate thirty four locations across fourteen states, meaning Northern Virginia residents can still find the brand at its outlets in Merrifield’s Mosaic District and Arlington’s Ballston Quarter.

Court filings reveal that the company’s struggles stem from a combination of high leadership turnover and shifting strategies that left them vulnerable during the pandemic. According to Nathan Cook, the chief restructuring officer, some locations suffered from lower than expected foot traffic while others failed to adapt to changing local demographics. These internal instabilities hampered an expansion effort that began nearly a decade ago when the brand first entered the East Coast market via Merrifield in 2014.

Looking ahead, True Food Kitchen is seeking a long term partner through Chapter 11 proceedings who can align with its mission and provide necessary resources for growth. To keep current operations running, the company has secured roughly twenty million dollars in financing from HumanCo. Management believes this simplification of their business model will allow them to refocus on their core identity of serving nutrient dense meals and maintaining high standards of hospitality throughout their remaining sites.
